Special Committee to Reconvene on Proposed Constitutional Changes Today
ISLAMABAD: The special committee of the house will meet again today, Thursday, to talk about the changes the government wants to make to the Constitution.
Khursheed Shah, the head of the special committee, said that the meeting about the 26th constitutional change was called by Aamir Dogar, who is the top whip of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The PTI said yesterday that there would be protests all over the country on Friday against the planned constitutional package.
“The PTI political committee has decided to fight against the changes to the constitution,”
the opposition party said in a statement on Wednesday.
A federal constitutional court is one of the goals of the constitutional plan. The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) will serve for three years.
Last month, the government tried to introduce a bill to change the Constitution, but its friends and members of the opposition benches were strongly against it. This made the administration start a feedback process.
The government needs a two-thirds majority in parliament to pass the constitutional changes. However, sources say they are short 13 votes in the National Assembly and 9 votes in the Senate.
During a late-night meeting on Wednesday at the Sharif family’s Jati Umra home in Lahore, the Sharif brothers, President Asif Ali Zardari, and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), all agreed on changes to the justice system.
After the late-night talks about the constitutional deal, Fazl, Bilawal, and Dar spoke to the reporters.
Maulana Fazl said that everyone agreed on the need to change the way the courts work and that more talks would be held on other ideas.
He also said that when he got back to Islamabad, he would meet with the leadership of the PTI and include their ideas in the constitutional change.
Fazl said again that his party still doesn’t agree with the first amendment, stressing that this is still their position.
He stressed how important it was to have full conversations about big problems in order to solve them. “If we engage in detailed dialogue on key matters, both the country and the Constitution will be safeguarded,” he told us.
While the PPP and JUI-F had already agreed, Bilawal thanked Maulana Fazl for his help and said that now three major parties had come to a wider agreement. “We seek the supremacy of the Constitution through constitutional courts and demand swift justice,” he said.
“When the time comes, we will make sure that both Houses of Parliament pass the proposed amendments.”
The leader of the PPP said
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also said that all three groups had agreed on changes to the courts. They should also agree on other suggested changes in the next few days.
It’s important to remember that the Senate and National Assembly have also started meeting today (Thursday).
The federal cabinet meeting that was meant to happen today has been moved to a later date. PM Shehbaz Sharif is going to cook a dinner for the lawmakers, though.
